About the Role
To support the growth for the next 40 years, the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra looks to hire a new Executive Director. Throughout its first 40 years, the CJO has built an extraordinary history producing jazz concerts with a full 18-piece band performing with such notables as: Grammy Award winners Benny Carter, Tony Bennett, Diane Schuur, Mel Torme, Bob Brookmeyer, Rob McConnell, Maria Schneider, and local hero Joe Lovano; Grammy Lifetime Achievement winners Clark Terry and Sarah Vaughan; NEA Jazz Masters Louie Bellson and Terri Lyne Carrington; Guggenheim Fellow John Hollenbeck , MacArthur Fellow Regina Carter, Grammy nominees Tommy Flanagan, Jon Faddis, Jimmy Heath, and Tom Harrell, and many others. Our mission is mission to increase awareness and appreciation of jazz by engaging the community with original music, exceptional performances, and inspirational educational programming. In addition, the partnership with Cleveland Metropolitan School District has CJO music instructors working with seven schools and over 100 young jazz musicians.
In 2021, the CJO made its season series home at the incredible Maltz Performing Arts Center, in University Circle. In addition to presenting 4-5 large scale season series concerts annually, CJO performs at various venues in Northeast Ohio and the surrounding areas all year, in clubs like the Bop Stop and BLU Jazz+ Akron, at summer festivals, in places of worship, in theaters, and more.

The Executive Director will be responsible for collaborating with the artistic director and the CJO staff and overseeing the administration, performance logistics, details and growth of: educational outreach programs and educational music festival, leading the CBA negotiations, and the strategic planning of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, maintaining donor relationships, developing and implementing marketing strategies, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.
