Jack Schantz

Jack Schantz served as the second Artistic Director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra from1994-2009. Under his leadership the CJO performed tribute concerts to The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (with Jim Pugh), The Glenn Miller Orchestra (with Tex Beneke), The Benny Goodman Orchestra (with Ken Peplowski),The Stan Kenton Orchestra (with the Four Freshmen), The Count Basie Orchestra (with Billy Byers and FrankFoster), The Sauter-Finegan Orchestra (with Bill Finegan), and backed singers Buddy Greco, Mel Torme, The Pied Pipers, Sarah Vaughn, Cleo Laine, Linda Eder, Tony Bennett, and Ann Hampton Calloway.

The CJO also performed concerts dedicated to the music of Charles Mingus (with Sy Johnson), Gil Evans, George Russell, the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band, the Terry Gibbs Dream Band (with Terry Gibbs), The Woody Herman thundering Herd, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis (with Jon Faddis), and Afro/Cuban music (with Alex Acuna and Arturo Sandoval).

During his tenure, Jack invited many of the leading composer/arrangers to conduct the orchestra in concerts of their works, including Bill Holman, Bob Florence, Sammy Nestico, Claire Fischer, Rob McConnell, Frank Foster,Slide Hampton, Gerald Wilson, Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider,Jose Privsek, John Hollenbeck, Ed Partyka, David Morgan, and Paul Ferguson.

Under Jack’s leadership, the CJO recorded a studio album, Traditions, and two live recordings – Swingin’ Together with Sammy Nestico, and The Surprise of Being, composed by David Morganand featuring Joe Lovano, recorded at Birdland in NYC.

Jack is currently Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Akron, a charter member of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and performs regularly with Tri-C Soundworks, the Sam Blakeslee Large Ensemble, and the CJO.
